USAGE

Opening WinUtilities Undelete

After installing WinUtilities, you can select its shortcut in the WinUtilities -> File Tools -> WinUtilities Undelete to open this module.

Scanning for deleted files

In the main application window, click on the volume you would like to scan from the Volumes list on the left. The scan will begin automatically.

Browsing and searching inside the scan results

After completing the deleted files scan, the deleted files are displayed in an explorer-like interface, with the folders on the right pane and the files and folders on the left pane. files are organized in folders according to the original parent, or according to the file type.

You also can select '{All Deleted Files}' folder under a volume to show all the deleted files on this volume, and then select files from right pane for recovering.

To recover Recycle-bin deleted files, please select 'Recycle-bin' folder under a volume.

Recovering deleted files

During scanning, WinUtilities Undelete calculates the chances of successfully recovering a file according to the amount of clusters from the original files that were overwritten by new files. If none of the clusters were overwritten, the file condition is marked as Good; if some clusters were overwritten, the file condition is marked as Poor. If an error was encountered reading a file record, the file condition is marked Unrecoverable.

To recover deleted files or folders:

1. Select one or more files or folders in the right pane.
2. Select Restore... or Copy to... from the right-click context-menu.
3. Select the destination folder to place the recovered files in. To minimize risk of data loss, and prevent the newly created files from overwriting the data you are trying to recover, make sure you select a destination folder on a different physical device, or at the very least on a different volume.
4. Click on OK to recover the files or folders to the selected location.

FAQ: When I run MS-Word (Office 2003 Pro), it displays a "Installing Word..."?

FAQ

Question:

After I use the program to clean files, when I run MS-Word (Office 2003 Pro), it displays a "Installing Word..." message & seems to be re-installing from the CAB. Does it every time. Is there a file in your list of file extensions that maybe should not be cleaned?

Answer:

The problem is with file: <Sytem Drive>\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\OPA11.BAK

When Disk Cleaner removes this *.bak file, and one runs Microsoft Word, it triggers some feature re-install of Word. you can set WinUtilities Disk Cleaner to skip that folder or uncheck '*.BAK' category under WinUtilities options dialog to solve this issue.

FAQ: How can I custom the History Cleaner plugins?

FAQ

Question:

Very pleased with the product and in particular the ability to create custom plugins. But here is where I would like more information. Many people would like to remove the $NTUninstall backup folders and associated registry entries from both the hard drive and Add/Remove Programs. Can this be done with a custom plugin? I would be very interested in trying this if I had more information on the capabilities and necessary syntax to achieve this.

Answer:

To remove the $NTUninstall backup folders, you can follow below steps:

  1. create a file named removentuninstall.pl under <WinUtilities installation folder>\hc_plugins\apps
  2. edit removentuninstall.pl, then append this:
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ;removentuninstall.pl
    [Information]
    Name=$NtUninstall Folders
    [Valid]
    display=FolderExist %Windows%
    [Action]
    doaction1=DeleteFolderList %Windows%,$NtUninstall*,NotIncludeSubFolders
  3. Restart WinUtilities History Cleaner module.

We will improve this history clean module and offer the SDK doucments for advanced users in the further.
